….they just signed a 20-year deal to buy power from an Iowa wind farm in an effort to cut pollution.
Kudos to you, Google, for being part of the corporate eco-revolution.

Going green doesn’t have to just be for big companies who can afford carbon offsets, wind power, and eco-friendly packaging. Businesses everywhere can take steps to help the environment and their community.  Take these for example:

  1. Use energy-efficient lightbulbs in your offices. They save on electricity costs and last longer than regular incandescent light bulbs.
  2. Eliminate paper plates and plastic utensils in your break room. Stock up on dishes and silverware from your local thrift store, and re-use!
  3. Did you know that the average U.S. office worker uses 10,000 sheets of copy paper each year? Less than half of all office paper is recycled, and come on people, 87% of us have access to paper recycling programs. Only print when necessary, and recycle every sheet you don’t need!
  4. Purchase refurbished ink cartridges instead of new. This saves money and reuses ink cartridges that would normally go to the landfill. To get a free shipping label to turn in your empty ink cartridges for refurbishing, click here.
  5. Recycle everything you can! Click here to get set up to recycle used cell phones, laptops, and other equipment your business uses and replaces.
It’s free, and you can choose to support a local charity or school with the value of your recyclables.  Free+Recycling+Charitable Donation+Tax-Deductible=Great combination!

It’s been a rough week.

Steinbrenner left us,

Consumer Reports gave the iPhone 4 the heave-ho,

and CNN told us that soldiers in Afghanistan might not be getting our care packages.

Oh, and I’ll spare you a picture, but ranchers in Texas think they’ve found the chupacabra. So there’s that.

At least the end might be in sight for the Gulf
And at least used iPhones are skyrocketing in value

Now more than ever, we need to take every opportunity to do what we can for the world and for our communities. An easy way to support the Gulf clean-up efforts and/or our soldiers and their families is to recycle used electronics.

July is Recycle 4 Soldiers month here, and you’re right, I’m gonna quote Uncle Sam…We want YOU to help out!

Here’s how:

1.  Go right now to your junk drawer and take out the 1, 2 or 3 retired cell phones you have sitting in there. (You can grab the chargers while you’re at it.) Click here and print out a FREE shipping label. Put the phones into an old box and tape it up. Tape the shipping label to it, and put it in your mailbox. Or, if you’re lucky enough to know your mailman/woman personally, you could hand it to them with a smile.
And you’re done! Your cell phones will be recycled or refurbished, and the proceeds will be sent on to the soldier support organizations we work with. See below for the list.

2.  Go to the Recycle 4 Soldiers enrollment page on our website. Sign up your school, church, neighborhood association, bridge club, or sports team (or any other group really, because do people still join bridge clubs?). We’ll send you all the info you need to start a year-round recycling drive to support our troops. This means you collect all the stuff we recycle and send to us on our dime. We recycle all the stuff and send the money to those non-profits listed at the bottom of the page. Everybody wins.

3. Oh, you’re already a non-profit working to support our troops? PERFECT! You can sign up to recycle also. We’ll send you customizable fliers to advertise your collection, and you can be part of a recycling team full of soldier support organizations just like you.

Stay tuned later today for some exciting info about the new iPhone!

We’ve talked about this before, but since we’ve joined Bloggers Unite, and blogs all over the country are joining the cause today and blogging about how we can help the Gulf.

Recycle 4 Pets is collecting empty ink cartridges, used cell phones, and other electronics to benefit the wildlife affected by the Gulf oil spill.

Click HERE to print out a free shipping label. Just put your used items in a box (click here for the full list of acceptable items), tape it up, and tape the label on. Drop it in the mail or hand to your friendly neighborhood postal worker.

We’ll send the
market value of your items to the National Wildlife Federation, which is working in multiple capacities to clean up the area.

You can also email recycle4acause(at)yahoo(dot)com for more information.

Only 2 more days to be a part of National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month!

In July, we’ll be switching gears a bit and focusing on one of our other programs, Recycle 4 Soldiers, but until then consider this…

4 million cats end up in shelters every year.
I couldn’t even picture what 4 million would look like, so I did some quick Googling and found out that
Los Angeles has about 4 million people living there
.
Whoa.

Luckily, if you’re one of the 4 billion people worldwide that use a cell phone, you can round up the 3 expired cell phones you most likely have lying around, and send them in to help the ASPCA or your local animal shelter.

Recycle 4 Pets is just one way you can help. Let us know how you support local or national pet and animal protection nonprofits, and you could be featured on our blog.

Today we’re talking about clean water.

28% of Sierra Leoneans living in rural areas have access to clean water. Only 28%.¹

The Gondobay Manga Foundation, founded by actor Isaiah Washington, is working to provide not only clean water to villages in Sierra Leone, but is attempting to address each village’s needs head-on, through communication and sustainability.

Founded when Washington discovered his own genetic link to the Mendé people of Sierra Leone, the Gondobay Manga Foundation is dedicated, among other things, to “establishing simple yet effective wells and pumping systems on a village by village basis, so that clean, fresh water is a reasonable distance from every member of the community.”²

You can be a part of this exciting effort. Visit the Recycle 4 Water website and get materials to send in your used cell phone, digital camera, iPod, laptop, GPS device, and more. Tell us you want the proceeds sent to the Gondobay Manga Foundation, and the value of your recycled electronics will be sent directly to them. You can even enroll your school, church, sports team, or club to start a recycling campaign to benefit the foundation.

JUNE IS NATIONAL ADOPT A SHELTER CAT MONTH

Oh hai. CFK’s own little friend here, Captain Bart, was adopted from a shelter. And now look at him!

You can help kitties just like Bart.

Donate money to your local animal shelter, volunteer your time, or combine a lil animal and earth luv and send us your old cell phone. We recycle or refurbish your cell phone from last year, and send the proceeds on to your local animal shelter, or the ASPCA, or the National Wildlife Federation.

KTHXBAI

June is National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, which means Recycle 4 Pets wants YOU to get involved!

In these economic times, charitable donations seem to be one of the things in our budgets that gets the axe first. Luckily, there are lots of ways to help your local animal shelter out this month without breaking the bank. Here are some creative ways you can help the cause:

1. Gather up the cell phone from 2 years ago that’s taking up space in your junk drawer, the DVDs you never watch, and the digital camera that now sits in your closet since you upgraded. Click here to get a free shipping label. Put the items in a box, tape it up, put the label on it, and drop it in the mail. Your stuff will get recycled, and the value of them will be sent to national nonprofits working for animals. The ASPCA, National Wildlife Federation, World Wildlife Fund, and the AKC Canine Health Foundation are all groups that your recyclables can benefit.

2. Volunteer your time. This is a big one. There are so many ways to volunteer–you could walk dogs, cuddle with cats, offer to help with their website or their newsletter, donate accounting or legal help, or get down and dirty and help with maintenance. The sky’s the limit.

3. Get the community involved. Hold a neighborhood recycling drive, bake sale, or car wash, and send the proceeds on to your local animal shelter.
